The Slammers, now operating out of two facilities on either end of metropolitan Denver, had more than 35 athletes sign college scholarships last year. With a bevy of youth teams also in the mix, the Slammers field nearly 50 squads and continue to evolve the talent base in Colorado baseball. No strangers to travel, the Slammers are aggressive in pursuing the tournaments and matchups that test their athletes. They will look to improve on their ninth-place finish in the 2016 US Club Nationals.

Quotes from Media Day:

12u
Coach Darin Carr: “On the defensive end, we want to make sure we get out of those innings quickly so we’re not standing out on the field in the heat for too long.”

“Our team’s playing well. We’re ready to play some of the best competition in the nation. Physically, we’re ready to go and mentally, we’ll be at our best. It’s our last tournament of the year, so we’re going to leave it all out on the field.”

Connor Choleze: “It’s been kind of different coming here. Back in Colorado, there’s no humidity or anything like that. Even in batting practice for less than hour, we were getting hot and sweaty.”

“We’ve had an up-and-down season so far, but we win as a team and we lose as a team. That’s what I like about [playing].”

10u
Coach David Stewart: “We’ve had a very successful season. This year has been a lot more successful than the coaching staff even expected. We’ve got a great sense of team and a lot of kids that just really like each other. We ask them to come have fun every day, work harder than everybody else, and support each other. They’ve really taken that to heart.”

13u – Holzemer
Coach Mark Holzemer: “This team has been really good to work with this year. We’ve really come out and played hard all season. We’ve had some issues with injuries this season. We’ve had to battle through some adversity, but I think we’re playing really well right now.

The one thing about these guys is that they don’t give up. They’ve battled through injuries this year, and they just never stop battling.

Last time we came here last year, it was our first time here, and I think maybe our guys were a little intimidated by the whole thing. We didn’t do as well as we wanted to, but we came back to another tournament this year and played well, so I think we’re ready for this week.

Brant Kragel: “We’re not intimidated by anybody that’s here. We’re just ready to play. We can’t give away any at bats. We need to play good in the field, and we need to throw strikes.

13u – Asnicar

Coach Colton Little: “These kids are grinders. They grind it out each day on the baseball field. The kids have been playing really well as of late, and we hope we continue that this week.

This is two teams coming into one. From the middle of the season until now, this team has really come together. You always have headaches at the start of the year, but from about the middle of the season on we’ve done really well.”

Garrett Klein: “It’s hot if you think it’s hot. You just have to be focused on the game. It’s been a roller coaster of the season so far, but over the last few tournaments, we’ve really done better as team.”

“We know we can be the best team here. We just want to keep our heads down and focus on the game of baseball. We need to excel with our pitching. We’re definitely going to need to focus on throwing strikes and not blowing it past anybody. We need to get our fielder’s some work and get them some ground balls and fly balls.”
